In the last four years that I have been coaching, a universal thread among so many women is that their needs have always come second. One of the symptoms of this complaint is that no one is really paying attention to them; no one is really listening to them. No one 'gets' them.
This is how I felt all of my life until I entered into therapy (for the last time) with an amazing woman who, on our first telephone call to make our very first meeting, made me feel she was totally listening to me. I got off the telephone and breathed a sigh of relief; someone to finally hear me.
I am going to share with you my philosophy about healing, which comes from building self-awareness.
The premise of the Financial Whisperer series is that people, for the most part, live their lives on two tracks. And what I mean by two tracks is this: how you feel, and how you respond or act, is not necessarily the same. You sometimes feel as if you have two lives. And you get frustrated because you can't really seem to effect change in what you think you should be doing.
The person living on two tracks experiences their life in a duality. They're kind of "off." It could appear like: they feel anger, but say nothing; they feel shame, but can't pull themselves away from the experience. Maybe they can't have intimate relationships that require true bonding with their partner. Maybe they can't seem to finish what they've started. Maybe they're critical of others. Maybe they're very judgmental. Fear dictates their actions. And they can't get their own needs met. They lack compassion for themselves. They actually lack boundaries. And, the older they get, the more frightened they become because they feel powerless to change, and frustrated because they have been in therapy, they've taken every workshop, they've read every self-help book, and nothing seems to work.
Nothing seems to work because most people talk from their heads, not their hearts. Most people are afraid to really dig deep and get to the root of their issues. Most people can’t get out of their own way.
The best form of advice I give clients is one of perspective. No judgments, no criticisms, and I hold their pain with softness, as they will learn to do for themselves in our sessions.
Self-examination is the most amazing journey, after all, who is more interesting than you? As an infant, you thought your belly button was amazing; well, it still is.
